Breaking Barriers: From Stigma to Strength
PridePads Africa is excited to announce our 2024 end-of-year campaign, Breaking Barriers: From Stigma to Strength.
Today we are asking you, our supporters, for help in meeting our $60k fundraising goal by making a contribution to Breaking Barriers: From Stigma to Strength. It is more important than ever to raise funds to help PridePads Africa with this important mission.
Menstrual Stigma in Cameroon
Girls in Cameroon are overwhelmingly under- and mis-informed about menstruation prior to their first period. Many religious and cultural practices perpetuate the idea that menstruation is a curse, disease, ailment, or demon/spiritual anomaly rather than a natural biological process.
Menstrual health education seminars and campaigns—like those conducted by PridePads Africa—are often the only robust and medically accurate menstrual education students receive.
In addition to our school visits, PridePads Africa engages community groups, many of which consist of local mothers, most of whom have not received menstrual education themselves.
Period Poverty in Cameroon
While conducting menstrual health education seminars in Ngaoundéré-area schools, the PridePads team found that many girl students missed an average of five to seven days of school per month due to their period. This equates to missing 20% of total instruction time annually.
At PridePads Africa, we believe menstrual health and hygiene is a crucial step in the road to gender equality.
